Baker Mayfield hears Hue Jackson but ‘I’m still going to try and win that job’

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Try telling a two-time college walk-on who became the Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall pick that he’s going to be the backup this year behind Tyrod Taylor. Then remind everyone that Taylor is definitely the starter and ‘that’s not going to change’ like Jackson did on Friday after the first day of rookie minicamp. It’s the stuff that Baker Mayfield’s life has been made of: tell him he’s too short, his hands are too small, he’s not good enough and all the rest, and you will only serve to throw a torch on the dry brush.”I’m always competitive,” Mayfield said Saturday before the second of three rookie minicamp practices. “It wouldn’t matter what (Jackson) was saying in regards to the competition. I’m still going to compete and try and win that job. So I’m going to listen to him, but I’ve got to go compete, and first and foremost, I’ve got to go learn my job.”That includes learning to operate under center, which he rarely did at Oklahoma.”A lot of basic mistakes (my first practice) that I don’t usually make,” he said. “You talk about just plays from the get-go, snaps under center. We had a couple of problems. When you get used to somebody new, we’ve got to make sure we’re not having to worry about that. Obviously it puts you in position to turn the ball over, so making sure we handle the basics first and then you’re able to move on and progress from there.”Jackson intentionally tried to stall Mayfield Mania after the first day of rookie minicamp on Friday.”He has a lot of characteristics that we love. That’s why he’s here. (But) let’s make sure we pump our brakes a little bit, because he’s got a ways to go and a lot to learn,” Jackson said. “I’m very excited about him. It was a good first day, but he’s got a ways to go. The guy you’re comparing him to (Tyrod Taylor) has played a lot of games, and won games in the National Football League.”Jackson re-iterated what he’s been saying: Taylor is the starter and there’s not an open competition.”I’m not going to back off of this,” he said. “We can keep writing this narrative, Tyrod Taylor’s the starting quarterback of this football team, and that won’t change.”
