Left-hander Nestor Cortes Jr. signed a major league contract with the New York Yankees and was added to the 25-man roster on Thursday.
To create a spot on the 40-man roster, the Yankees moved right-hander Dellin Betances to the 60-day injured list. Right-hander Jake Barnett was optioned to the minors.
Betances has resumed a throwing program but isn’t expected to be ready to return to the bullpen until June.
Cortes, 24, made his debut in the Yankees’ farm system in 2013. His rights briefly belonged to the Baltimore Orioles when they selected him in December 2017 in the Rule 5 draft, but he was returned to the Yankees’ organization in April 2018 when Baltimore designated him for assignment.
He made four relief appearances with the Orioles in 2018, giving up four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings pitched.
In 114 games in the minors, Cortes started 63 games, posting a 32-22 record and 2.64 ERA.
